Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 40 - The Drunk Fight

by comecloser on Feb.26, 2008, under Torched Laughter

I am going to assume for now that Day 40 was Saturday. At a later time I’ll figure out the right day.I have a week off from recording `Torched Laughter.’ I have to get my voice in shape for the vocal tracks for Torched as well as the Metal Project thingy. Lastly I’m waiting on a particular vocal mic which is so popular that I have no choice but to wait until one is made available: The Neumann TLM-103. The current mic I own is quite emasculating in nature. I think it’s a great mic if you are going for a `London Trip Hop’ sound because it’s so mid-rangy. But the second you get aggressive or sing baritone the mic strips the power and resonance away. It wants you to behave, be sensitive and be correct. It’s like a liberal arts college.Saturday I returned the AKG C1000’s. The price Long and McQuade offered to sell them for wasn’t worth it. The positive side is that I now know what mics to invest in moving forward.

I also started laying down metal guitar tracks with the Ibanez AF-85. Though the guitar tracks for this metal project are technically done, I couldn’t resist trying out the songs on this guitar. It sounds so good that I’m definitely going to do additional tracking. It’s aesthetically pleasing to know that a lot of non-metal approaches went into these songs. If I went the pointy guitar route, I think a lot of what I perceive as `magic’ would be lost. To each their own right? I don’t want to get impaled by Sweeping Arpeggio Al’s flying V because he misinterpreted my personal taste for a lambast against the KVLT of METAL. (continue reading…)

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Days 32-36, 37, 38?

by comecloser on Feb.23, 2008, under Torched Laughter

After a long week filled with drama, sore elbows and shoulders, losing track of what studio day it is, all the drum tracks are completed. Whoosh! That is a big breath escaping from me. Or a precursor of a death rattle.

In order not to feel overwhelmed I played one drum a day. Tuesday was African Djembe day, Wednesday was `I’m going to do this track despite not sleeping zzzzzzzzzz’ day, Thursday was Ashiko day, and Friday was changed from Rock Band party day to Dumbek day. After last Friday’s dramacophony it was necessary to change this day’s priorities.

Since I haven’t updated since last week, here are some key bullet points of what has happened:

-Last Friday’s Rockband Party descended into chaos, thrown rings, self-loathing, and none of it thankfully centred around myself or the missus.

-Last Saturday was a continuation of Friday, but there was much sleep. Woke up in the afternoon just in time to return the upright bass. I already miss that hulking hulk thingy.

-Sunday I was test miking again. Another guitar was bought. Remember that Ibanez AF85 I was salivating over? It’s as good as I thought it was.

-Monday was drum practice. It was also `Family Day’ in Ontario. A new holiday. I rejoice. There’s a warranted incest joke to be made here I am sure of it.

Tomorrow/this Saturday I return the AKG C-1000’s to the rental outlet. If you’ve been keeping up with this blog you’ll notice that these mic’s have been a blessing.  I will see if they can be bought for a reasonable price.

Synchronicity

The second I walk into my home and close the door behind me I hear this coming from the computer speakers.

Ugh. Now even the radio is talking to me. Thanks Ant.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 31 - Backstory

by comecloser on Feb.19, 2008, under Torched Laughter

‘Torched Laughter’ was the result of a tumultuous and sultry evening I had in an opium den in Egypt.  Involved was a farfisa organ and a stick of butter. There were monologues given to corpses recently exhumed for Bacchanalian amusement. Amputee children throwing sewage at passed out policemen. And cocaine. Good times were had by all involved.

That’s what I would have liked to have ocurred, but sadly it didn’t quite happen this way.

`Torched Laughter’ originated with a little Radio Shack tape recorder which I carried with me at all times a few years ago. I would mumble warbly melody lines, strum guitar ideas, and capture the sounds of my immediate environment. Guitars, planes and arguments. Any sonority committed to this tape player would be consumed by crackling, hiss and distortion. It was a dirt cheap recorder. A few of the sounds/ideas that were recorded were the foundations of a few of the `Torched Laughter’ songs. Instead of listening to the idea and then record the song properly, I took the original bad hiss recordings and built the songs around them.

This is the most straightforward recollection I have of this idea. There are a lot of other experiences that happened (much stranger, sadder, dramatic things) which contributed to `Torched Laughter.’ I apologize for alluding and not expanding on those things yet. It’s tantalizingly cheap for any of you who may have an interest in this. (continue reading…)

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 30 - An Omission

by comecloser on Feb.14, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Getting very close to getting the right microphone set up for the hand drums. Finally found the right combination placement for the microphones. The tricky one was the microphone that goes underneath the drum. Still not 100% but progress is being made.

I have made a glaring omission through out this blog: The songs themselves. All this time I’ve been writing about the mundane aspects of recording and some of the extracurricular gibberish associated with it but never delving into what is being recorded.

In the coming days I’m going to steer away from the day to day recording aspect and try to focus on the songs that will be delivered to you shortly.

Guitar Hunting - A Low Impact Adventure

by comecloser on Feb.14, 2008, under Uncategorized

The Missus was looking for a guitar. The playing of the game `Rockband’ really inspired her to learn how to play a real guitar. She had her sights set on 2 different guitars. One makes me cringe, the other I salivate over. BC RICH WARLOCK (yech) and a Ibanez Artcore (YES!)

What can I say, she’s an enigmatic little camper.

BC Rich Warlock. Roar.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 29 - Obstacles? I Love That Greek Philospher

by comecloser on Feb.12, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Thus we get to the hardest part of this recording process (for me:) Hand drumming.

I am not up to the performance aspect of it yet. Just trying to capture the natural sound of each drum has been frustrating. The rule of thumb for this project has been to avoid compressors at all times. It can be done, but it takes good performance technique and mic placement to do such a thing. Haven’t had any luck yet. I’ll keep trying until I find the right placement. When I mean Mic Placement: I’m talking about the world of centimeters, not feet or distance. The general rule is place a mic near the head of the drum and one underneath to capture the bass/body.

The djembe I’m using (an animal skinned drum) is very unruly with rich overtones and punchy bass. Perhaps the spirit within the drum does not approve…Perhaps it longs to be with a New Age artist, safely away from my dungeon of megalomania and chain smoking.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 28 - Play It Again, Husky Boy

by comecloser on Feb.12, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Day 27: Nothing happened. Just bloody tired and exhausted from consensus reality rigors.

Day 28:

Sometimes there is this awful latency when you are recording alone:

Where it takes a few days to figure out whether what you recorded was any good or not. Your perspective gets a bit distorted, especially after you’ve been tracking for a very long time and you’re tired. It’s times like this I wish I had an engineer/producer to immediately identify problem areas.

I let a day pass and realized the upright bass tracks weren’t any good. They were sloppy and not mic’d as well as I originally thought.

I originally used a Studio Projects C1 to capture the body sound of the bass. Because it’s omnidirectional, it picked up some offensive sonic artifacts in the room. This time I used the AKG C1000’s. Time and time again they are proving to be the winners. Spent about 5 hours overnight redoing the bass which yielded much better results. But who knows how I’ll feel in a day or so when I re-listen again.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Days 25 & 26

by comecloser on Feb.08, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Upright bass tracks have been completed and gosh darn was it bloody and painful. The end results are good though. I got the best sound I could out of it with the budget and skills available to me.

Now, it wasn’t bloody and painful like a hard rock/heavy metal band press release such as:

OH WOW! TRAX ARE DONE! I BLED OUT PLAYING MY BASS ON THIS SUPER DEATH RUMBLE TRACK THAT WILL MAKE U GET HARSH TRIBAL TATS AND BLOW SHIT UP!

HOLY FUCK MAAAAN! I’M GONNA PHOTOSHOP FLAMES ONTO MY FUCKING FACE!

It was more like I busted through some callouses because I don’t play bass on a regular basis and the resulting blood was akin to what any inexperienced or out of practice musician would endure. So instead of good Japanese gore, you get safe hollywood cut scenes.

And the last song worked on was hardly heavy. Intricate? Yes. But there are no references to superchargers or assault rifles. You weep. I know.

The last tracks to do before the vocals are the hand percussion which will start right after I type all this nonsense out. They will take the longest to do.

Today was a snow day. 2+ foot snow drifts. I saw no point going out. While I was outside surveying my own little planet Hoth, my deficient neighbor with the affinity for urban music uttered a shred of wisdom that I hope you all take to heart:

`Don’t wear ankle socks out here brahhhh, my feet be soaked.’

 Indeed.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 24

by comecloser on Feb.04, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Upright bass practice. Tomorrow I start laying the tracks down. I have this behemoth for 2 weeks. I hope some interesting ideas are created with it during this time. However, I’m a bit apprehensive right now. I’m about 10 days behind schedule with this recording. I was hoping to be at the vocal stage at this point. Oh well, not much I can do about that at this point. If I start rushing I know the results will be akin to living off the floor of a vomitorium for sustanence.Watched the last 5 minutes of the Super Bowel, New England’s failure was delicious.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 23

by comecloser on Feb.04, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Do you know how much of a bitch it is to stuff an upright bass into a vehicle?

Very.

Jazz, bebop, swing, pretentious earnest irreverant indie shitmouth musicians, I empathize with you. How in Hades do you get that thing around to gigs? Do you snap the neck off and reglue it before each show? Do you all own a partridge family school bus?

Renting the bass went without incident. Rather disappointed really. No interesting stories to share this time. Perhaps it’s because I went to a different Long and McQuade. The one I went to this time was smack dab in the middle of an industrial park that is pretending to be a city.

ROCKBAND TIP: If you are playing the drums, do not use the drum sticks they supply in the box. Go out and buy brush sticks. They’re low impact on the drum heads. Apparently the ROCKBAND drums are very fragile because they were rushed in and out of production.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 22 - ROCKBAND PARTY!

by comecloser on Feb.04, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Day 22

I picked up Rock Band. Whatever I ever said about Guitar Hero does not apply to this game. It doth rule.

I would classify this game as `edutainment’ for the simple reason that you need excellent rhythm for the drumkit and the vocals. Unless you’re one of those insufferable tools who wails away as quickly as possible on the drums so you never miss the beat given to you.

There are 2 instruments that I avoid playing: The Tabla and the Trap Drum Kit. I don’t have the coordination for the good old American Drum Kit. Rockband comes with a drum kit and I lept at the chance to learn some of the basics of drumming. How this is germane to the Torched Laughter recording is this: I have massive amounts of percussion to do in the coming week. My timing is admittedly rusty save for when I play the wind drum. Why not have some fun and practice at the same time?

The ROCKBAND kit is sort of set up like a real small kit: You play the snare with your left hand, hihat on the right and the kick drum with your foot. The songs are set up that you have to actually hit the drums just like the original drumming in the songs. (more or less when you are on expert)

The vocals piss me right off. If you’re an R&B singer who likes to drag every note into the ground you will fail. Pitch isn’t an issue, but again, you have to have perfect timing. Sadly when I started enjoying myself singing, that’s when I started failing horribly. That whole FEEL thing gets in the way real quick.

Anyway, that’s all for now. May write more about the Rockband experience later on. Actually have to work at some point.

Programmers: Is there away to permanently remove the Yeah Yeah Yeah song out of the game? Let me know.

Torched Laughter Studio Diary: Day 21

by comecloser on Feb.04, 2008, under Torched Laughter

Finished up the wind drum tracks. Much joy. I’m continuing the use of the AKG C1000 mics for pretty much all the drums. Aside from that, not much else regarding this day. Then again I am writing this 4 days later. I’m slipping, I know.
